Closing Letter from General Manager Tom Day
March 18, 2020
Dear Gunstock Community,
The last 72 hours have presented an unprecedented challenge for ski area operators around the globe. The unfolding COVID-19 crisis has forced the closing of ski areas overseas and here in the United States. Those of us who make our living outdoors know what it means to our community to have space to play and clear our heads, and these times call for that now more than ever. But we must be sensitive to the rising public health and safety concerns and we agree with the Gunstock Area Commission that it is in the best interest of our employees, guests, and local community to cease winter operations at the close of business March 18, 2020. We believe this is a necessary step to limit the spread and risks associated with the COVID-19 virus.
I would like to personally thank our dedicated team who have been working tirelessly under unusually difficult circumstances these last few days. While the immediate future remains uncertain, we will be getting to work right away on preparations for the summer season. To our loyal passholders and guests, we apologize for the impact this will have and thank you for your continued support. We anticipate a higher than normal call volume over the next few days and appreciate your patience with us as we work through your questions together.
And finally, to our local community and neighbors, this is your mountain. While we will not be able to provide safety services during this shutdown period, you are welcome to enjoy the walking and hiking trails at your own risk. For those of you looking to hike up for some turns, please read our Uphill Travel Policy.
This decision was not made lightly but we take comfort knowing that we are doing everything in our power to combat the spread of COVID-19 virus in our local communities. We know we will get through this and look forward to many more adventures together when Gunstock reopens for the summer season on May 23, 2020. Your continued support means everything to us.
Tom Day, President & General Manager
